About Susan Roche
Meet Coach Susan Roche
Susan Varady Roche fell in love with horses 33 years ago after one week of summer camp in Palo Alto, CA. She grew up in Los Altos, CA (“The Heights”), now the center of Silicon Valley. As a junior she competed in local hunter/jumper shows, horse trials and eventing, and earned her “A” rating through the US Pony Clubs.
Susan left California for the east coast where she was captain of the Princeton Equestrian Team. After graduating from Princeton in 1995, Susan pursued her doctorate in clinical psychology and focused on sport psychology during her internship at The George Washington University. Despite a year or two out of the saddle, Susan always found her way back to the barn riding in the Cotswolds, England, Munich, Germany, Middleburg, VA, Pittsburgh, PA, Silver Spring, MD, Waxhaw & Chapel Hill, NC, and now in Colorado Springs, CO.
After 22 years Susan is once again a horse owner with her wonderful teammate “Bibi,” a 9-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare. Susan and Bibi (show name Atalanta) competed in the Adult Amateur Hunters, Adult Equitation, and medals during the 2014 season. Susan and Bibi were Champion Horse of the Year in Zone 8 in Amateur Hunters 36-49 and Reserve Champion in Zone 8 Equitation 36-45 (and Champion in both divisions of the Colorado Hunter Jumper Association). During the 2015 season they spent time in the AAs before moving up to the Low Amateur Owner Hunters. Coach Roche lives in Colorado Springs with her husband, son, daughter and Golden Retriever. She maintains a clinical psychology and coaching practice in addition to her work with Altos Performance Psychology.
Susan is now in a unique position as a doctoral level psychologist, leadership coach, and life-long equestrian currently in the show ring. These experiences combined with Susan’s compassion, memory, attention to detail and dedication to her clients will help you take your sport to the next level and truly reach new heights. Sessions are available in person in Colorado or the San Francisco Bay Area, at your facility, at a competition, or via phone or Skype.
